[dezie | dezie ebe o si]Documenting Igbo Proverbs and Building Audio Archives is a Wikimedia project designed to preserve and promote Igbo oral heritage through the documentation of traditional proverbs (Ilu Igbo) in audio format. The project will be implemented as a hybrid event, combining both online and in-person activities.
Background
[dezie | dezie ebe o si]Igbo proverbs play a vital role in communication, cultural identity, and the transmission of traditional wisdom. However, many of these proverbs are gradually disappearing due to language shift, urbanization, and generational gaps.
This project aims to preserve these proverbs by recording them in audio format, ensuring they remain accessible for future generations.
Objectives

- To produce up to 50 high-quality audio recordings of proverbs
- To upload recordings to Wikimedia Commons in open OGG format
- To support the development of Igbo Wiktionary through improved and new entries
- To promote awareness and usage of the Igbo language and culture

Activity Description: A fun and interactive street challenge will be organized where passersby will be invited to:
- Say an Igbo proverb
- Explain its meaning
Selected responses will be recorded (with consent) and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as part of the project’s audio archive.
Expected Outcomes
