Wiki For Catholic Youths

Books of the Bible, although available in English language, is absent in Igbo language, thereby making it difficult for native speakers to access this all important information.

This project which is in collaboration with the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka aims to introduce Catholic youths to Wikipedia while also informing them of other Wikimedia sister projects and also bridging the language barrier gap on Wikipedia.

Participants will be guided on creating a global Wikimedia user account as well as receive hands-on training about creating new articles on the Igbo Wikipedia.

Expectations

At the end of this project the following expectations should be met:

1. Participants will own a global Wikimedia user account to assist in contributing to open knowledge.
2. New contributors will learn the basics of creating an article on Wikipedia.
3. At least 60 Igbo Wikipedia articles will be created.

Outcome

This project brought about the following positive outcomes;

• Enriching Igbo language and knowledge: Through the contributions of these newly recruited volunteers, a total of 82 new articles were created on the Igbo Wikipedia and 124 valuable resources were edited for Igbo readers/speakers worldwide.
• Fostering community growth : This Project and collaboration have increased our community by bringing in 20 new young learners and volunteers, with a total number of 28 registered participants.
• Promoting evangelization: This project has helped spread the message of Christ and promote a greater understanding of Catholicism by expanding the reach of Books of the Bible to a wider population of Igbo Speakers and readers.
