Mattie the Goose-boy, or Lúdas Matyi, is a Hungarian poem written by Mihály Fazekas (1766–1828) in 1804 and published in 1817. It is based on a folktale of unknown origin. Most versions place the story in the early 19th century, although based on the elements in the poem, and the use of the word "ludas" to refer to a criminal suspect in the Tripartitum, the original story can be dated to at least the early 16th century. The structure and purpose of the story are similar to the Akkadian tale of the Poor Man of Nippur, which dates from 1500 BC..

Matyi, a young farmer, is trying to sell his geese at the market. Trouble begins when the village lord, Dániel Döbröghy, offers to pay them half the price, which Matyi refuses. Lord Döbröghy orders his servants to take the geese by force, and to beat Matyi with fifty lashes on the back. Matyi swears revenge, declaring that he will repay his master three times the punishment.

After ordering the servants and guards to forage in the forest, he dragged Döbröghy, tied him to a tree with ropes, and beat him for the first time.
