[1]Monika Biernacki (born 2 January 1956) has been interested in helping sick and homeless dogs since childhood.  He considered training as a veterinarian but he "couldn't manage to put animals down, or vivisection".  Instead, he qualified and worked as a geologist.  After the local vet said he would put down two healthy dogs but didn't want them, he agreed to take the dogs to new homes.  As his home renovation project grew, Biernacki secured the support of volunteers and moved into a larger home, first in Duffys Forest and Homebush, before settling in Ingleside.  The organization was registered as a charity in 1991.

[2] Biernacki was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for "services to animal welfare" in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours.
