The city, located near the Sacred Valley of the Andes mountain range, is the capital of the Cusco Province, has a population of 428,450 inhabitants and its elevation is around 3,400 metres (11,200 ft). The site was the historic capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th until the 16th-century Spanish conquest and was declared in 1983 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

El lugar fue capital histórica del Imperio Inca desde el siglo XIII y hasta la conquista de los españoles en el siglo XVI. Fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO en 1983.
