The National Park Service operates the Maggie L. Walker Historical Site at the nearby former home. The abandoned St. Luke Building held the office of Ms. Walker. The office was left the way it was at the time of her death in 1934. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Ms. Walker was an African-American teacher and businesswoman. She was the first woman bank president in the United States. A school named in her honor, the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies, is considered on of the best high schools in the United States.
