Notes The date appears to be July 13, 1914, but that is incorrect as the context of the painting makes clear; "In this dramatic nocturnal scene, Henry Ossawa Tanner recorded the Celebration of the Dead, held on July 13, 1919, in Paris to honor those who died defending France during World War I."[1] The war was just beginning in 1914, there was no reason to celebrate yet.
