[1]Point Mugu (/m uː ˈɡ uː /, Chumash: Muwu) [1] is a cape or promontory within Point Mugu State Park on the Pacific Coast in Ventura County, near the city of Port Hueneme and the city of Oxnard.  The name is believed to be derived from the Chumash Indian word "Muwu", meaning "river", first mentioned by Cabrillo in his journal in 1542. [2] Lake Mugu is a body of water located on the edge of a promontory.  in Naval Base Ventura County formerly known as Naval Air Station Point Mugu.

. The name comes from Muwu (Ventureño: "Beach"), [1] [2] which was the name of the Chumash village at Point Mugu in pre-colonial times.  The Muwu community (CA-VEN-11) has the highest population of any Chumash community on the coast along the Santa Monica Mountains.  [3] Muwu was the ceremonial center and capital of the ancient Lulapin, a political division of the Chumash region that stretches from present-day Los Angeles County to Santa Barbara in the north.  The territory extends 60 miles (97 km) along the coast, and at least half of it is inland.  [4] Missionary reports indicate that 191 people were baptized in Muwu, more than any other Chumash village in the Santa Monica Mountains.  The last chief of Muwu, Mariano Wataitset, son of Halash (Big Chief of Muwu), was baptized at Mission San Buenaventura in 1802.

On January 31, 2000, Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crashed off of point Mugu, killing all 88 people on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operating the flight [2]

[3]Mugu Rock is a unique headland promontory that has been featured in many movies and television commercials.  This spectacular waterfall marks the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains, as well as the boundaries of Rancho Guadalasca.  The rock was built when the road was cut through the nearby slopes of a volcanic eruption in 1937. Roads were blasted along the trail in 1923–24 to complete the Pacific Coast Highway between  Malibu and Oxnard Plain.  This replaced a narrow path along the rock and most of the path has since been destroyed.

[4]This is a popular and dangerous place for fishing, sightseeing, swimming and rock climbing around the cliff.  [1] On Thanksgiving Day 2008, three young men from Oxnard were swept overboard and killed by waves while swimming and watching from Mugu Rock.

[5]Directly east of Mugu Rock is the Point Mugu State Beach Campsite.  [1] The park has 5 miles (8 km) of beach and over 70 miles (110 km) of hiking trails.
